Article in Haaretz

I just saw this article in Haaretz. It talks about Orthodox lesbians in Israel and focuses mainly on the ways in which they form families. Some of them talk about forming families as being a route towards social acceptance, while others discuss the ways in which they believe forming a family would make it more difficult for them. The sheer number of women (they talk about having a shabbat meal with 20 children of lesbians present) suggests that these children will grow up knowing each other and knowing that there are other families like theirs. I’m glad to know that they are being born into a community of lesbians within the orthodox world.

Thousands of Years of Tradition Why a Lesbian Relationship is not a Cheeseburger

Wow, what a good article. Maybe my standards are low – it’s just exciting to see some acknowledgment that we exist and that we, too, have (surprisingly traditional) Jewish families. Raising children as an Orthodox lesbian couple brings up lots of questions that have no easy answers, and it’s good to hear other people talking about how they work things out.

    Very interesting post.
I think that a big part of the problem is that many people seem to view homosexuality as a ta’avah for sex and forget that that it includes a very natural, deep-rooted desire for a committed relationship.
